Preserving the fabric of a busy school, college or university is always going to be a challenge. The rough and tumble of students moving from one class to another can quickly cause unsightly damage leading to corridors and doors losing their pristine appearance.

Walls, doors and corners in schools are subject to continual and intense damage and require a strong, impact absorbent system that will disguise abrasions, scuffs and general wear and tear. Heworth Grange School in Gateshead which has nearly 1400 pupils opted for Yeoman Shield wall protection after everyday wear and tear quickly took its toll on the fabric of the building, especially in corridors and around stairwells.
Looking for ways to put a stop to further expensive and unsightly damage, the school's building manager, Jim Slack, called in a member of Yeoman Shield's national sales force for advice.
It was clear that the volume of pedestrian traffic had left its mark and urgent action was required. Walls in the school's corridors, classrooms and staircases are now protected by Yeoman Shield 75mm Protection Rail and Wall Protection Panels, which prevent damage at varying heights.
Protection Panels were supplied in a dark colour complete with a relief pattern to conceal damage from impact and abrasion. Vulnerable wall corners and pillars also now have the added protection of specially formed 75 x 75mm Corner Protection Angles and Yeoman Protection Strip.
Yeoman Shield is aware that budget restraint is always a concern and the company endeavours to provide cost effective options that will save money in the long term by reducing the need for ongoing, expensive and inconvenient repair work.
Jim Slack said: "We were looking for effective ways to protect our buildings and budgets. Yeoman Shield provided us with the ideal solution and we are delighted with the results."
Yeoman Shield products have also been extensively installed throughout New Bridge Street School in Oldham. The purpose built school for children with special needs has prevented potential damage that could be caused by wheelchairs and walking aids by installing Yeoman Shield 200mm Protection Strip at low level and 75 x 75mm Corner Protection Angles in matching mid grey.
Yeoman Guardian Handrail in steel blue was also fitted at mid height to protect against damage to the school's corridors and to provide support. Light grey stop ends act as an aid for those with impaired sight denoting the start and end of the rail and the beginning of doorways.
Graham Quinn, Headteacher at New Bridge School, said "The workmanship and quality is outstanding, the attention to detail has meant that our students with a visual impairment have been able to access the site with ease due to the difference in texture and colour."
